Kanye West NOT Doing Porn

Sun Jan 25 18:21:54 -0800 2009

In regards to online rumors rapper Kanye West has made it clear that we will not be acting in pornographic films any time soon. Though he has stated in the past that he is a sex addict, porn addict, and believes porn stars are "real day heroes", West recently stated on his blog he has no plans in joining the adult entertainment industry.

The phony information hit Tuesday when an anonymous user on a AllHipHop.com message board posted an interview of what he claimed were quotes from West.

"I know people will find that as another thing to hate me on, but f--- it. I'm open to doing porn. Hell, I'll even do bisexual scenes. Myself, another man and a woman or just me and two women. I know people will find that as some weird s---t but I am who I am," West was falsely quoted to have said.

AVN (Adult Video News) soon picked up the story and helped lead to massive Web dissemination. The post has since been pulled from AllHipHop's forums and AVN has apologized for its role.

"YOOOO WHY WON'T YOU LET ME BE GREAT!!!   I HAD THE TWO GREATEST DAYS OF MY LIFE AND WHEN I GET BACK FROM THE LOUIE SHOW I READ SOME **** CLAIMING I SAID I'M DOWN TO DO PORN AND SOME BISEXUAL PORN!!!!" West posted on his blog.

"I JUST GAVE  THE PERFORMANCE OF MY LIFETIME FOR OUR NEW PRESIDENT ... THEN I FLEW TO PARIS AND THEY DEBUTED MY NEW SHOES THAT I DESIGNED WITH LOUIE VUITTON WHICH WAS A DREAM COME TRUE.     PLEASE I BEG YOU, GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!! PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   LET ME BE GREAT!!!    WHO HAVE I HURT SO BAD THAT THEY WANT TO DESTROY ME?   WHO HAVE I EVER SPOKE ABOUT SO NEGATIVELY?"

Kanye West is nominated for six Grammy Awards.

Quincy Jones Advocates for U.S. Secretary of Arts

Sat Jan 24 15:44:07 -0800 2009

In a November interview with WNYC radio Quincy Jones, the famed record producer behind Michael Jackson's Thriller, said he would "beg" President Barack Obama for a position on his cabinet dedicated to the arts. Now supporters of the cause have started an online petition advocating this notion, which would bring America up to cultural pace with many other countries who have already appointed similar positions (via GOOD).

So far the petition has nearly 200,000 signatures. Will you add yours?

It is an interesting notion that America could have a minister of cultural, or something of the sort, as arts and the U.S. government have forever seemed unconnected. But in other nations this is not the case. The Danish, Swedish, and Canadian governments all work with artists with financial support for their work, paying in part for recording, international tours and marketing. Because, in essence, by promoting one's culture on an international level, that is a form of diplomacy.

"Soft Power", this is called, and it is form of international relations through the promotion of books, movies, music, and any other form of art the country's citizens may produce. And though this form of diplomacy -- most prominently championed by Harvard Sultan of Oman Professor of International Relations Joseph S. Nye Jr. -- may have its flaws with especial consideration to the blockbuster nature American art, it has proven beneficial for many smaller nations.

“It ultimately comes down to what one thinks of activity of the state on behalf of art or commerce,” said Brent Grulke, creative director of the annual Austin festival South by Southwest, in a 2006 New York Times article about soft cultural diplomacy. “Clearly one of the more inexpensive things that we can produce that potentially has great financial rewards is our culture. For nations that have any kind of forethought into the future of their economies, it’s a no-brainer.”

Though America's cultural dominance is already felt across the globe from Baywatch to Metallica, in ways that are not always positive to diplomacy, perhaps a Secretary of Arts might help to even improve our national image. After all, there's plenty of room for improvement, from promoting smaller and independent talents to helping the nation's struggling arts education. And now with such serious talk by Secretary of State Hilary Clinton about "Smart Power", which combines an appropriate mix of "Soft Power" and the guns and bombs of "Hard Power", now is the appropriate time for such a position on the president's cabinet. Because our creative culture is one of our most valuable assets, it should be treated as such with care and support.

N.A.S.A.

Fri Jan 23 13:07:22 -0800 2009

Big names and strange ideas help N.A.S.A.'s debut record lift off.

On N.A.S.A.’s The Spirit of Apollo—the brainchild debut of Sam Spiegel (a.k.a. Squeak E. Clean, brother of director Spike Jonze, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ coproducer) and Brazilian DJ Ze Gonzales—what standouts most is the collaborations the duo attracted.

Here’s the list: David Byrne, Chali 2na, Gift of Gab, Chuck D, Seu Jorge, Method Man, E-40, RZA, John Frusciante, KRS-One, Fatlip, Slimkid3, Karen O, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Tom Waits, Kool Keith, Kanye West, Santogold, Lykke Li, Sizzla, Amanda Blank, CSS’s Lovefoxxx, George Clinton, Spank Rock, M.I.A., Nick Zinner, Del Tha Funkee Funkee Homosapien, DJ Qbert, The Cool Kids, Scarface, and Ghostface Killah

A New York-native, Spiegel says the project started as a simple collaboration between two Los Angeles transplants amazed that music could have united a team from such different backgrounds. They used this notion of different worlds being brought together and assembled some of the most unlikely collaborations imaginable, recording many of them live in the same studios. “North America South America” was the basis of their name and they took it from there, uniting the world through music and some out-there ideas.

Says Spiegel, “Along the way we got really into space and, I’ve always liked space but I really learned a lot about it and a lot of thought went into the concept and trying to make it as cohesive as possible, the way the songs all bridged into each other…it was a crazy adventure. I got really interested in quantum physics when we were making the record and really saw this connection to the record and dopest thing that I took out of quantum physics, and this is very subjective but, is the like world is kind of like as you view it. You can create your own universe. And that’s from the Eisenberg Uncertainty Principle. This is what I took out of it.

“I actually went to the Santa Fe Institute of Technology and met with this guy Murray Delmont during the record and filmed the interview, and I was trying to connect with him on this spiritual way that I view quantum physics and he’s just like totally shutting me down like every corner, ‘No, no, no, quantum physics is not spiritual you idiot, it’s science.’ But the Eisenberg Uncertainty Principle states that, or basically, they figured out that atoms were made up of protons and neutrons in the middle and the electrons are going in a circle around there. But what they discovered is that actually electrons don’t travel in a circle, they’re seemingly everywhere around the nucleus, but they only appear when you look at them, and they did this thing where they got the same electron to appear in two different places at the same time so they react to the observer, and so that means that atoms that make up matter are something that respond to being observed. So for me that means you create your own reality and the most minuet point of structure of the universe is reacting to being observed. So to me that means the whole universe is reacting to being observed. I feel certain that the whole universe reacts to being observed, which kind of means if you use that in a positive light that’s a positive thing and you can create what you want like we did with this record.

“We took this concept and this idea years and years ago and built and built and built and then all of a sudden it was there. And also that kind of thing to me is a unifying force, like the way the record is conceptually a unifying record, we are all creating this universe together, but that’s a pretty powerful idea too. But unfortunately the quantum physics stuff, like, I really wanted to find a way to sneak it in there but I’m not sure how much it really got in there, it probably didn’t get in there very much. But at least it was there in spirit; it was inspiring us.”

Remote Patrol: Animal Collective, Antony, Obamas

Wed Jan 21 16:46:33 -0800 2009

Animal Collective, Antony & The Johnsons and the Obamas make the list of this week's notable music videos.

If video killed the radio star, what did the Internet do to the mix? Well, like everything else, it made distribution easier. Every week I will feature some of music’s newest, greatest, and weirdest videos. Just tune in and Remote Patrol will take care of the rest.

Animal Collective: "My Girls"
With the buzz in full effect surrounding Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion the album's first music video is a strange and enjoyable trip in and out of a psychedelic iPod commercial.

Antony & The Johnsons: "Epilepsy is Dancing:
The Wachowski Brothers create something just as theatric as Antony's song here. Sure it's weird, but it's plenty beautiful as well (via Superhumanoids).

The Obamas First Dance (Feat. Beyoné)
There's a new First Couple in the White House. Call it cheesy or whatever, but this sort of thing doesn't happen all that often.

New Rock Band for Lupe Fiasco?

Sun Jan 18 22:57:20 -0800 2009
Rumors have spread online about what may be a new project for rapper Lupe Fiasco. Last year Fiasco announced plans to retire from hip hop and now, of all things, people suspect he is fronting a new British post-punk band called Japanese Cartoons. Japanese Cartoons has, however countered such rumors with a statement on its MySpace page stating that Fiasco is not the band's singer Percival Fats but is involved with the group financially and as a producer.

“Percival Fats (Born Percival Hindenburg-Fats) Is NOT Lupe Fiasco (Born Wasalu Muhammad Jaco). Although he is a dear friend,” it read. “Lupe does finance the band but is NOT I REPEAT NOT THE SINGER IN JAPANESE CARTOON. He is however the producer and we value his participation very much.”

Fiasco also took to the web to clear up such rumors on the Okayplayer.com message boards under the name FNF UP UP AND AWAY, echoing his limited involvement. "Ha! I like those kids alot," he wrote. "met the bass player overseas last year and their publicist/manager is a good friend from like childhood. May sign them. Not me singing though.
sorry sports fans."

Nevertheless fans and bloggers are not convinced, siting song similarities in two parties' vocals. If he is in fact in Japanese Cartoons, well, many will surely be interested to see where this thing is headed. If he's not, then you can just count this as one of the best publicity moves a young band has gotten in ages.

Glasvegas

Sun Jan 18 13:52:05 -0800 2009
Pub punks with priest-like disposition, the Scottish foursome of heartstring rockers called Glasvegas has been making a splash on both coasts of the Atlantic as of late thanks to a well-received debut album on a major label and massive touring efforts. The band formed in Glasgow in 2003 and began gigging around Scotland before picking up a new drummer in 2006. By the next year Glasvegas was amidst a bidding war from several major labels with press by the NME and a few heavily heralded singles. On their eponymous album they blend gentle confessions with melodic instrumentation that is occasionally switched out for full on tsunamis of sound, riding a thin line between brash and beautiful. But that is just the world, this bunch comes from--street level romance, earnest work and barroom brawls. Frontman James Allen was even once a semipro footballer. All of that is enough to make the band entirely likable. And though they've been preparing for it for some time now, the fame and success that has now found Glasvegas is still a bit of a surprise for the band:

"When you come from Glasgow," guitarist Rab Allan told The Guardian in December, "and you've worked in a factory putting meat from one box into another and a year later you're in New York drinking with famous people... Well, it's a bit of a headfuck sometimes."

Glasvegas' self-titled album is out now via Columbia.

Indie 103 Goes Web-Only

Thu Jan 15 17:32:20 -0800 2009

Renowned L.A. radio station Indie 103.1 quits the "corporate radio game" and the local scene takes a hit.

Starting today (Thursday) the renowned Los Angeles-based Indie 103.1 radio station exists no more on the airwaves. According to on-air announcements made today and a statement on its website, Indie 103.1 will now exist in a web-only streaming format:

"Because of changes in the radio industry and the way radio audiences are measured, stations in this market are being forced to play too much Britney, Puffy and alternative music that is neither new nor cutting edge.

"Due to these challenges, Indie 103.1 was recently faced with only one option --- to play the corporate radio game.

"We have decided not to play that game any longer. Rather than changing the sound, spirit, and soul of what has made Indie 103.1 great Indie 103.1 will bid farewell to the terrestrial airwaves and take an alternative course.

"This could only be done on the Internet, a place where rules do not apply and where new music thrives; be it grunge, punk, or alternative - simply put, only the best music."

Though Indie 103.1 was recently named the nation's best radio station by Rolling Stone and retained a large presence in the Los Angeles music scene, both live and otherwise, it's small and loyal audience was seemingly not paying off financially. In the most recent Arbitron ratings Indie ranked just 38th in its market, averaging a low 0.6% of the listening audience compared to mainstream alternative rock station 106.7 KROQ's 3.5%.

But two questions now exists: How will Indie 103.1 fare online, and what station will I listen to now? One can only speculate at this time, but as rife as the web is with streaming radio stations suddenly Indie 103.1 seems to have lost its appeal. While it was once a standalone taste maker amongst loads of compressed garbage on the FM dial, due to the vast online market of streaming radio it is no longer that same indie outsider. Independent music owns the web, after all, and what was so wonderful about this station was that it was making a go at the mainstream. Say what you will about the station's programming over the last year, the way they championed The Next Big Thing to excess, but at least it was listenable radio--cutting edge for a commercial station and better than the rest.

As for me, I supposed I'll be listening to a lot more Los Angeles' oldies station K-EARTH 101 now. And as for Los Angeles, a city known for vanity with a Top-40 attitude, Indie 103.1's on-air demise is a crying shame for our local music scene.

Insound Sees a New Kind of Music Retailing Emerge

Mon Jan 12 10:43:59 -0800 2009
Insound Sees a New Kind of Music Retailing Emerge This Holiday Season

For the better part of the last decade, Insound, the premier online indie store, had heard countless gloomy forecasts for music retailers. Although combined in 2008 with a weak economic environment, Insound’s surprising optimism proved well-founded as it enjoyed a 91% increase in total transactions in December 2008 when compared to the same month the previous year.

The marked growth was driven by dramatic up-ticks in vinyl, band merch and music gift and accessory sales. Insound is not a CD store or a digital store. While they sell music in both aforementioned formats, they excel in products that the most avid music fans desire – vinyl, band merch, gig posters, turntables, music related art-books, etc.

Insound’s success echoes recent Nielson reports indicating a significant increase in the number of music related sales in 2008, despite a distinct decline in CD sales.  Aside from digital track sales, this trend is most prevalent in vinyl; Insound’s vinyl sales showed a staggering 130% increase in 2008, contributing to the national increase of 89% in vinyl sales reported by Nielson. Insound’s sales were spurred by its forward-thinking “LP +MP3” program, in which customers who buy select LP titles receive the MP3s of the album’s MP3s for free, immediately with purchase. “LP+MP3” includes nearly 500 titles from labels such as Sub Pop, Saddle Creek and Beggars.

While vinyl accounted for over 40% of Insound’s sales this past December, band t-shirts and posters accounted for over 15% of business. Insound works with leading indie labels and silk-screen studios to aggregate the best designed band merch in the market. Similarly, Insound’s selection of turntables, music books and well designed audio accessories reflect a new approach to music retailing that is driven neither by CDs or by MP3s.

In line with this approach, Insound recently announced a series of Pre-Order Product Bundles, that connect digital music to band merch. For the same cost of a t-shirt, each pre-order delivers customers an exclusive t-shirt designed by a renowned design studio and a digital download of an entire album (both of which ship on the album’s release date). The series kicks off with A.C. Newman’s album Get Guilty (Matador) with a t-shirt designed by Sydney Vermont. Future offerings include Beirut, designed by Delicious Design League, Handsome Furs, designed Andy Dixon, and The Thermals, designed by Bwana Spoons. Learn more here.

Animal Collective

Mon Jan 12 00:58:17 -0800 2009

There's no telling what makes Animal Collective so... so... well, it's hard to even place a single adjective to this band. Weird, eclectic, eccentric, awesome, brilliant, visionary, spiritual, the list of hyperbolism could span through an entire article and beyond. And in fact, it often does. In regards to the New York City/Washington D.C./Lisbon-based quintet's newest album, Merriweather Post Pavilion, its ninth in as many years, the praise has been almost nonstop. Pitchfork awarded it a nearly unprecedented 9.6 rating, while many others have prematurely awarded it the best album of 2009, making it the most hyped album this year has yet seen. Though that is not to say the excitement is unwarranted. On Merriweather Post Pavilion Animal Collective manage to further hone their out-of-this-world experimental neo-psychedelia with strange pop sensibility that to make an hour's worth of material both mind-bending and listenable. And as for three four guys originally from Baltimore, MD, nicknamed Avey Tare, Panda Bear, and Geologist, well, whatever is in that water let's hope they keep drinking it.

Merriweather Post Pavilion will be officially released Jan. 20 on Domino.

A Tasty New Spooonful of Music

Fri Jan 09 11:21:53 -0800 2009
Finding new music just became a whole lot easier thanks to Spooonful.com , a new web service that sends weekly emails introducing new, hip bands and artists. Rather than sifting through music magazines and blogs, Spooonful works as your personal filter and essentially tells what is good and who to like, including a sound preview, purchasing links, and tour information. The musical spectrum ranges across genres from indie rock, singer-songwriters, dance/ electronica hip-hop, and jam bands. And for those skeptics out there: "We never accept money for our editorial opinions and we’re not affiliated with any record label," it says on the website. So far the service has helped spread the word of bands including Aesop Rock, The Virgins, and Ida Maria, providing all the essential information for budding fans. Yeah, it's like a word of the day calendar, but easier and way more fun.

Jay-Z Meets Radiohead and Get Mashed

Wed Jan 07 17:42:10 -0800 2009
A good mash up can do wonders for one's career, just look to Danger Mouse and Girl Talk for proof: After releasing The Grey Album, a mash of The Beatles' White Album with Jay-Z's Black Album, Danger Mouse quickly rose to fame as the red hot producer du jour. Meanwhile, the acclaimed Girl Talk has based his full artistic expression around this point, mashing up basically any popular songs he can get his hands on. And though the notion is not one that's altogether new it now appears that a mash up may once again help launch the career of a young producer. Internet musicheads have been abuzz over the work of Minty Fresh Beats and his combining of various Jay-Z and Radiohead to make, you guessed it, Jaydiohead. The album, which he made available for free download at Jaydiohead.com, quickly made its way around the web on message boards and music blogs, earning a mix of praise and criticism, making the 22-year-old Max Tannone a minor online celebrity.

"Ever since I was 16, I've been making beats and remixing different a cappellas and instrumentals into original songs, but I was just doing that for fun," Tannone told MTV News on Tuesday. "I always just sort of used the name 'Minty Fresh Beats,' even though it doesn't really mean anything. About a year ago, I did an early mix of Jay-Z's 'Pray' with Radiohead's 'I Might Be Wrong,' and I just put it up on my MySpace page, and it just sat there. But I always thought it would be a fun project to do a whole Jay/Radiohead album."

Though Tannone told MTV he does not know how many times the record has been downloaded, it has been posted on blogs around the world on Russian, Spanish and French-language sites. So far there has been no action by Radiohead or Jay-Z to remove the mashup from the web. And while there is no telling whether Jaydiohead might lead Tannone out of his NYC post-production company desk job and into the limelight, but it shouldn't hurt and at the very least he'll have a good story to tell from it all.

Tobacco

Sun Jan 04 21:13:55 -0800 2009

Little is known about Tobacco, frontman of experimental psych-rockers Black Moth Super Rainbow, but if his 2008 solo debut, ****ed Up Friends, is any indicator it seems eccentricity is the fuel to his day to day living. The man born Tom Fec works alone in rural Pennsylvania, away from social conventions and obligations, allowing himself to produce what he wants and how he wants it without interference. With BMSR that has meant edgy beats with doctored vocals and a striking tension. Solo it means a beautiful vision, darker than before that stays mysterious and intriguing like a musical riddle made by analog synthesizers and tape machines, conjuring blips and beeps for hooks and grooves throughout a collection of mostly instrumental tracks. As for that eccentricity: "I want to keep the real-life people separate from what the band is," Tobacco told Rolling Stone in 2007 about his choice to adopt a pseudonym. "If I disappeared or stopped making music, or something ridiculous happened in my personal life, that would never affect what the band has created." And, what's more, it just adds another layer of mystery to his amazingly confusing work.

The Knux

Mon Dec 29 01:03:07 -0800 2008

With sweet-toothed smiles and cocksure swaggers, Kruspy Kream and Rah Al Millio, aka The Knux, chant the chorus "I need a fresh cappuccino with a mocha twist" on their first single "Cappuccino". This, of course, throws them deep into the realm of silly, which then accented in tenfold as the brothers bound about on their debut LP, Remind Me in Three Days. But these two are plenty smart too. The music is witty and fun, like Stankovia Southern rap destined for the club. New Orleans-natives displaced by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Kream and Millio moved westward and eventually made it to the Hollywood glitz and glamor, and like a rock and roll fantasy come true success found The Knux. Once Paul Rosenberg, manager of grammy-award winning rappers Eminem and Three 6 Mafia, and the rock band +44, discovered its demo the act's career was surely revived from the wreckage that fell upon it. Soon, Rosenberg called the duo out to Los Angeles and by fall 2006 and they began recording. They meanwhile began dipping their toes in the cool kid culture, making friends with models and celebrity DJ Steve Aoki, while signing a major-label deal with Interscope. With the record wrapped, the next year started with performances on their living room couch for Kream and Millio but it closed with opening act on tour with Common. The two produce and play their music with live instruments, which has garnered them praise and comparisons from Outkast, to The Pharcyde, to The Strokes.
