Caught Inside With Roxy Louw

Posted on Tue May 12 13:19:00 -0700 2009

Roxy Louw may be a model for Oakley, but don't discredit her surfing skills. The South African babe has been hitting the water since she was a kid and once rescued some guys who got caught too far out in the waves. Help us Roxy we're drowning...

Forget about Carmen Sandiego - Where in the World is Roxy Louw?  “I’m sorry, I just got back from Bali!” was Roxy Louw’s apology to FUEL TV after three weeks of unanswered emails begging for an interview. But such is the life of South Africa’s sexiest lass.  This jet-setting surf starlet is the international face for Oakley, Woolworth’s South Africa, Blackberry, Subaru, and the good life in general.

Between flexing her DJ skills at Tiger Tiger in Durban and chasing waves in the Maldives, Miss Louw was kind enough to wax hilarious on saving lives at sea, models upchucking, and even clarified some questions we had regarding the First Boer War (1880-1881).

Out of breath FUEL TV finally caught up with Roxy for a few Qs and As......

Hometown?
ROXY: Cape Town South Africa.

Besides being an Oakley-sponsored Pro Surfer, who else do you shill yourself to?
ROXY: I’m stoked to represent Built Surfboards, Blackberry, Subaru, Woolworth’s, and then there are a couple of restaurants and beauty suppliers that throw things at me now and then. Seriously, I’m really stoked to have such great support from my sponsors.

If you could watch the sunset on a deserted tropical island with anyone, alive, dead or fictional - who would it be?
ROXY: Nelson Mandela… and maybe Paul Walker too. Can they both be there?

There's got to be hilarious behind-the-scenes stuff at modeling shoots.  Dish the dirt here - what's the most ridiculous thing you've ever seen on a shoot?
ROXY: The funniest thing I’ve seen was last year at the SA [South Africa] Sports Illustrated’s Swimwear shoot in the Maldives. We were on a boat, and one of the girls got sea sick during the shoot. So she’s bringing up over the side, and then jumping up to smile for the next picture!  It was hilarious seeing the finished shots! They looked great!

What's the most heroic thing you've ever done?
ROXY: I was chilling at home on my balcony in Clifton looking out at the ocean, when I saw a boat going down and people abandoning it Titanic-style. Which was plenty bad, but there were huge swells too!
So I grabbed my wetsuit, and swam out there, pulled the guys out of the breakers and onto shore with the help of a lifesaver. To this day, I still can’t shake the nickname “Baywatch Babe”, and I can’t go to a club without some guy saying, “Roxy, I’m drowning, please save me!”

What's been the biggest thrill of your life - besides being interviewed for Fuel TV of course!
ROXY: Signing up with Oakley! I have not stopped traveling since then. I love it! What a great team!

Ten years from now - what do you think you'll be doing?

ROXY: I’ll be 31, and hopefully have a man in my life and kids. But when I’m all done with the modeling and surfing thing, I’m thinking about going back to school to study advertising.

Could you kindly explain the First Boer War for us – we slept through this in history class.
ROXY: Next question please!

Most romantic place in the world?
ROXY: Mozambique, that place is so beautiful!!

What's the closest call you've ever had surfing?
ROXY: I was knocked out by my board a couple years back. Luckily my dad was in the water.  He lifted my head and my blonde hair was stained red from all the blood! I was concussed, went to the hospital and had some stitches put in.

Your father, Rob Louw, is like the Pele of rugby I hear - was it tough growing up with such a famous father, especially in rugby-crazed South Africa?
ROXY: My dad is quite an influential person in South Africa. I remember sitting around the fire with him and all his mates listening to him tell stories. Even still, he’s the life and soul of the party.  He is definitely my number one wing man when I go out, I love him so much!

What's on the agenda for the upcoming year?

ROXY: Come July, I’ll start shooting a series for SA TV. It’s similar to Endless Summer, where I travel the world searching for the perfect day and the perfect wave. Then I head off to Reunion Island to do a survival challenge in October. In between I’ll be surfing my ass off!

Your thoughts on being honored as a "Fuel TV Girl"?

As we say in SA, I’m STOKED BRU!!!!
