The fearless host of the Daily Habit, Pat Parnell has hosted the Olympics, Dew Action Sports Tour, MTV Sports and Music Festival, the US Open of motocross, Gravity Games, Vans Triple Crown...and on and on. You get the idea--Pat knows action sports.

Tell me about the Daily Habit and what you think it offers viewers?
A cool slice of athletes that most people usually don’t get to experience beyond the fluff of seeing them rip at what they do. It’s a proper stage to give the respect and voice all these athletes have deserved for years but have been denied from the mainstream.

How is it different from other sports shows?
We make our guests sit in uncomfortable positions throughout the show. Truly.

Who has been your favorite interview so far or maybe name a few?
Tom Green was like watching a social tornado. Loved it. I was stoked to rap with Terje, & amazed by Tim Currens’ music abilities. Thanksgiving with the Metal Mullisha, Punking Bam, and staying coherent with David Arquette are close to being top shelf. Breaking down big waves with Dave Kalama was class & letting Henry Rollins rant as Dinosaur Jr jammed was all-time.

Why did you get chosen to host this show (a little background)?

I know people that know people. I probably have to say the decision to let me man the helm was based on my background of covering not one, but a variety of sports for many years. I’ve never been one to have a myopic approach when it comes to what stokes people out. Simply put, I’m an open-minded fan of it all.

You covered the Olympics and events like the Dew Tour, how are these events
different from one another?

The Oly’s are on the world stage. The athletes, the coaches, the fans, everyone put’s an amazing amount of emphasis on what happens there. Its reach is so vast and can reach billions.
The Dew Tour is a dream to establish a proper season to these sports. It’s still in its infancy. When all said and done, (if it’s successful) the Dew Tour (ASPT) will have laid the fundamental groundwork for generations to come. I hope it endures.

How do you feel about action sports being in the Olympics?
If not forced as to inherently grab a younger demographic, I think it’s part of the natural evolution of sports. With the risk of sounding “cheese”, these sports are a big part of the future.

What sport do you think will be Olympic-ized next?

They’ll try with skateboarding. BMX Supercross makes it debut in Beijing 2008…The IOC is planning to launch an event in conjunction with the Olympics in 2010 to reach kids. Sadly they are missing the point entirely.

What action sports do you do?
Living in Laguna Beach I surf more than anything…it’s a fickle place for waves, so Skimboarding is also a must. While at home when all is flat Mtn. Biking is an option. Laguna has ridiculous single track. Snowboarding probably takes the second top spot and I even get on the 2 planks (ski) occasionally. Growing up it was more skating.

What is your personal favorite to do and/or to watch?
Surfing & surfing. But I should say, watching solid skate parts in videos is a close second. High speed and huge gaps. Example: Jake Duncombe.

Hometown: Laguna Beach, CA

Scotland FMX-ing, Oahu and Other Random Happenings

Fri Jul 06 16:50:00 -0700 2007

Captains log from June 15th week.

Went to Oahu to check out the Surfs Up premiere. A must see, if not just for the realistic wave animation. Salema Masakella, Slater and Machado all have parts as commentators. Mai Tais flowed @ Dukes followed by some longboard sessions out @ Queens. Actually caught a party wave with Sal, his girlfriend, Kelly and Cameron Diaz I even dabbled on Rob’s Channel Islands performance-twin fin, stand-up paddle board. Not as stable as the normal mega size ones, but still fun.

Then it was off to Ireland @ Slane Castle for the Red Bull X-Fighters. It was a ridiculous backdrop for an insane FMX comp. Hats off to Red Bull for building one of the best courses I’ve ever seen. Sadly Mado (Aussie hellion Robbie Madison) broke his leg in practice on the massive ¼ pipe. Prior to that he was killing it. Like any Red Bull event, it’s almost more about the party. Ireland was no exception.

Andy Bell flew in to be a judge, get mucho boracho and rip sleeves off people’s shirts. This of course after Pastrana took the comp early due to rain. Good times.

Now back too normal as the Habit gets in summer mode. We’ve had some classic shows the past 2 weeks. Notable mentions: Clyde Singleton dropping in on the set ¼ pipe with a big wheel, Slam from American Misfits bomb dropping from the set and bonita bikini show from the Salinas girls.
