Interview: Pat Duffy Does Stupidface

Posted on Thu Jun 18 10:09:00 -0700 2009

It's been a crazy ride for the Duffinator, who first became a name in 1992 after his part in "Questionable", by Plan B Skateboards. Ever since he's been in and out of the skate scene and joined back up with Plan B in 2006. Of course we're not surprised to see him popping up to pull some zany stunts with the cast of Stupidface, Built to Shred and American Misfits. We caught up with Duff to see what mischief he's up to next and how his body is holding up after a lifetime of thrashings.

FUEL.TV: How does it feel to be a part of the resurrection of Plan B?
Pat Duffy: It’s really a good feeling. We’re just kicking ass right now It’s good to be a part of a whole team that’s so diverse. Everyone gets along and it’s a good thing to be a part of. It’s a pure skateboard brand run by skaters. Everyone has a say in what goes on and it’s a cool vibe.

FUEL.TV: What do you think of this new generation of skaters in the Plan B crew?
PD: We have one am Scott Decenzo and I would say watch out for him. He’s amazing. Just going for it. Of course we have Paul Rodriguez as well and he’s pure talent. A total workhorse. Everyone is great though.

FUEL.TV: How’s the health these days?
PD: There hasn’t been a lot of problems lately. I broke my knee in four places a few years ago and had four surgeries. The doctors told me I wouldn’t skate again and I am happy to be out there doing it. I am almost 100%. I really didn’t think that would happen.

FTV: List off your other injuries.
PD: Where do I start? I have had surgery on left arm, broken my foot. I have had lots of injuries over the years so it’s hard to even remember them all.

FTV: Tell us about your Stupidface Episode.

PD: It started with an idea we had about 5-6 years ago. Ted and Laban and I filmed a bit of it then and they found the footage and called me up and said, “We have to finish this. It was a great idea.” Basically there’s the character Jovanate and I want to be like him so he mentors me. I am following him down escalators and jumping out of buildings. It was pretty fun. We were actually throwing dummies down escalators as my stunt double.

FTV: Can we expect to see you in other episodes? Do you want to become a TV guy?
PD: (Laughs) Sure, it’s fun and I love hanging out with those dudes.
I just called Ted the other day and told them I want to work on more stuff. I have been friends with them for so long so I get their sense of humor. It’s always fun to do TV. It’s fun to do funny ****.

FTV: So what’s your next gig with them?
PD: I want to go on the road with Misfits and heard rumor of a tour so if that happens I am going for a leg of that for sure.

FTV: Where have you been hanging out lately?
PF: I have mainly been in San Diego. I haven’t been traveling that much. We have a video next year and so I am just staying on the ball skating.

FTV: Where else can we expect to see you?
PD: I have a Thrasher interview coming up. I started it a month ago so it’s so going but in the works.

FTV: Any international plans?
PD: My wife just went back to Finland to see family and I am going to go there for two weeks at end of the month and then I am going to skate Barcelona with the DC crew. It’s just a film mission. The last time I was in Barcelona I went for ten days and I broke my foot the first day I was there. I was on crutches just drinking a lot of red wine and hanging out so that wasn’t much fun just watching everyone else skate.

FTV: Where’s your favorite place to skate?

PD: I would have to say NYC ‘cause it’s just fun to skate the streets there.

FTV: Who is your favorite person to skate with?
PD: Probably my brother.

FTV: What other trouble do  you hope to get into with the Stupidface/American Misfits crew?
PD: As soon as Laban gets over his fear of playing music on camera we are going to throw down some wicked gypsy jams. I play banjo and he plays accordion so we could pull that together. We could put some wicked gypsy tracks together but he’s so gun-shy about being on camera so we have to get him over that.

Couldn't stay up past midnight to watch Duff's antics on Stupidface? Don't worry, we got you covered. Watch this Stupidface clip below.
