The moment Jeff Spicoli first rolled out of that smokey VW, the surf/skate culture got a new ambassador that promoted two things; surfing as a way of life and checkered Vans. Since 1982, they have been a sub-culture phenomena and we’re willing to bet 5 Washington’s that you couldn’t find one member from either school of boarding (or pretty much anyone anywhere, really) that has never owned a pair of the classic black and whites. You remember your first pair, don’t you? The way they felt, the way they smelled, and when you slipped them on how you somehow felt cooler. So to celebrate the world’s love of the classic slip-on, iconic pattern, and their rise to the top of the totem pole, Vans’ own Doug Palladini put together "Vans: Off the Wall: Stories of Sole from Vans Originals." Like a debutante being launched on society as "ready & available" June 4 was that day and The Seppos were at the Vans headquarters to catch all the fun release action.

The shindig was definitely one Spicoli would have been proud of. There was not one, not two, but four different types of food trucks to choose from ranging from Italian to TK Burger. There was an Archies ice cream truck and most importantly, there was an open bar! Inside the walls were covered top to bottom with pieces from the Vans Book: Off The Wall Gallery Project, where Vans invited innovative artists they have worked with over the years to offer their own personal take on the iconic Vans skateboard logo. Some of the artists include Jermaine Rogers, Tony Munoz, Geoff Rowley, Mr. Cartoon, Neckface, Nathan Fletcher, Travis Mallard, Steve Caballero and Joel Tudor, just to name a few.
After winding our way through what seemed like endless hallways of art we found ourselves watching the complete annihilation of the ramp in what felt like the Vans kick-back, garage arena. Shredders included the littlest Florence, Joel Tudor and Omar Hassan. Then, just when we thought watching some of our hero’s skate was exciting enough, TSOL started to play. Its safe to say that fun was had by all, except maybe the kid that was puking in the parking lot at the end, but mega shaka to Vans for an amazing evening!
