Joel Centeio Wins Reef Hawaiian Pro At Home

Tue Nov 24 03:12:14 -0800 2009

All photos by Paulo Dias

There is a party in the North Shore tonight! Local boy Joel Centeio, lived his dream today at the Reef Hawaiian Pro, catching a massive barrel on the final and finishing first in the event. It was a day to remember for the Haleiwa locals, who witnessed one of their own win the prestigious 6-star prime WQS event.

Even though the final heat wasn't as consistent as some of the quarters or even semifinals, Joel managed to ride two good waves, get shacked on both and get the job done. His second barrel was heavy and set the crowd on fire.

Watch the final day's best moments:

CJ Hobgood was also on form today, threwing big maneuvers and charging hard. Parko, besides being stopped in the quarterfinals, surfed the barrel of the day and scored the only perfect 10 of the entire event.

There were two big QS updates after the event, the qualifications of  Aussie Jay "Bottle" Thompson and Nate Yomeans to the 2010 Dream Tour. They secured the points and are officially in.

Joel Centeio now leads the Vans Triple Crown, which continues tomorrow at Sunset Beach with the opening of the second jewel, the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing. FUEL TV will bring you daily updates, photos and video highlights of the event, so check back!

Haleiwa, HI (Nov. 23, 2009) - Patience and faith in his home break of Haleiwa delivered local boy Joel Centeio the biggest victory of his career today, winning the Reef Hawaiian Pro in 6- to 8-foot surf with a late barrel ride and only the mandatory two waves to his credit. Joel, 26, came from the very first round, winning all seven heats he contested. He now takes an early lead on the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing presented by Rockstar Energy Drink series ratings. His win today earned him $20,000. If he can stay the course and win the Vans Triple Crown series title, it will pay another $50,000 as well as a $10,000 custom Nixon watch.

Runner-up in the final was Florida's CJ Hobgood, third was Australian Jay "Bottle" Thompson, 27, and fourth was Tahiti's Alain Riou. Hobgood and Thompson were always within striking distance - requiring less than a 7.0 point ride to turn the tables - but Haleiwa chose to favor her own.

While the win catapulted Centeio from 131st on the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) ratings to 51st, he still has no chance of qualifying for the 2010 ASP Dream Tour.

Even though it didn't end in a win, Thompson (Burleigh Heads, QLD) was satisfied with third, qualifying for the 2010 ASP Dream Tour with this result.

"I feel pretty relaxed actually," said Thompson. "This kind of solidified my campaign for the tour next year. I'm frothing, but really relaxed now. This year and last year I've been a replacement so I've been in every event (of the Dream Tour), but I've been kind of bogging so I really wanted to get back there and give it a 100 percent next year."

Californian Nathan Yeomans also did enough today to qualify for the 2010 ASP Dream Tour, moving to sixth place on the WQS ratings with his quarter final finish. He ended the event in equal 9th position, losing to Hobgood and Riou.

Parko claims his 10-point ride.

The upset of the day was world title contender Joel Parkinson's loss in the quarter finals. While the Reef Hawaiian Pro does not affect the world title race, Parkinson had been the standout, posting the two highest heat scores of the event as well as the only perfect 10 point ride (a deep barrel in the round of 32 today), as well as the second-highest score of the event, a 9.87. Parkinson succumbed to a lack of waves on offer in his quarter final heat.

The VANS Triple Crown of Surfing now moves along the North Shore to Sunset Beach for stop #2: the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing, and the women's Gidget Pro Sunset Beach. The holding period for Sunset officially commences tomorrow, running through December 6, however organizers anticipate a Wednesday start, coinciding with the arrival of potentially the biggest swell of the winter so far. Parko Brings It On At The Reef Hawaiian Pro

Joel Parkinson, current number 2 in the world and soon-to-be fighting for a World Title, turned up the heat today at the Reef Hawaiian Pro. The Australian got the barrel of the day and put down the best score of the event (9.87). San Clemente's Tanner Gudauskas was also charging hard in the same heat, in hopes to collect valuable points towards a spot in the 2010 Dream Tour.

As the new NW swell arrived at the North Shore of Oahu, sets started to roll in and finally, for the first time in the competition, Haleiwa showed it's true face.

Check out the video highlights of the day, including hot performances from Damien Hobgood, Pancho Sullivan, Aritz Aranburu, Torrey Meister and more:

******

Haleiwa, HI (Nov. 22, 2009) - Taking on world title contender Joel Parkinson (Australia) was all the incentive Southern California's Tanner Gudauskas (San Clemente) needed to take his surfing to the next level at the Reef Hawaiian Pro today - the first leg of the $1,000,000 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Tanner needs to reach the quarter finals of the Reef Hawaiian Pro tomorrow to keep his dream of qualifying for the 2010 ASP Dream Tour alive. He advanced to the round prior to the quarter finals today, a close second behind Parkinson in the highest scoring heat of the event to date. Wave face heights topped out at 15 feet today and are expected to hang stay around for the final day of competition tomorrow.

Parkinson (above) and Gudauskas ran away with their heat, each finding high-scoring barrel rides and hard-carving turns to eliminate North Shore local Pancho Sullivan and Brazil's Marcio Farney. The final scoreline: Parkinson - 16.54 out of 20; Gudauskas - 15.43; Sullivan - 13.26; Farney - 5.6. Gudauskas could have won almost every other heat today with that score. Parkinson logged the highest wave score of the contest for a double-barrel ride: 9.87 out of 10.

Currently ranked 17th on the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) ratings, Tanner needs to finish the season in the top 15 to be guaranteed a place on the elite Dream Tour. His qualification dream was given an added push today when several surfers ranked ahead of him lost, allowing him to make some ground.

"I just kind of figured I would need a hell of a lot to make that heat," said Tanner (above.) "I was psyching myself out because these guys have no flaws. Pancho (Sullivan) is pretty much a Triple Crown hero and Parko is a world champ contender. I just figured I would have to try as hard as I could and it was epic because there was tons of waves in the beginning of the heat, and there was no weird stuff.

"I would be stoked to get a really good result here. I'm taking it heat by heat, just having fun. I don't have anything to lose. I don't have the points and I have to go out there and get 'um. I'm having a great time."

Parkinson looked relaxed and focused today, reveling in the rising surf and the fact that he's back in the islands: "I haven't paddled out in awhile, and I realized I was back in Hawai'i and back in the Triple Crown. I got really excited to be back. I love the Triple Crown to death and I would hate to miss it. I'm so glad I'm here."

Eliminations today included US Open champion Brett Simpson (Huntington Beach, CA), Taylor Knox (Carlsbad, CA), former Vans Triple Crown of Surfing champion Bede Durbidge (Australia), Dusty Payne (Hawaii), Clay Marzo (Hawaii), and Tanner's older brother, Pat, who is still on track to qualify for the Dream Tour.

The final day of the Reef Hawaiian Pro will take place tomorrow at Haleiwa, Oahu, Hawaii, getting underway at 8am. The winner will be crowned around 2:30pm. Catch it all live online.

Old And New School Clash at the Reef Hawaiian Pro

Thu Nov 19 00:58:08 -0800 2009

2009 Reef Hawaiian Pro. All photos by Paulo Dias

After five days of flat conditions in Haleiwa, the swell finally arrived, allowing Rounds 2 and 3 of the Reef Hawaiian Pro to hit the water today. Even though the waves were small, organizers wasted no time, running a full action packed day of competition at the North Shore of Oahu.

The biggest story of the day was the clash of generations between powerhouse Sunny Garcia and Maui's Clay Marzo, who dropped jaws at the beach with a big variety of air tricks and progressive surfing. Sunny, six time Triple Crown of Surfing winner and former World Champion, was on form today, throwing powerful hacks and posting solid scores.

Tanner Gudauskas and Nate Yeomans, two California surfers with a chance to qualify for the 2010 World Tour, advanced into Round 4 and are looking to solidify their CT campaigns here at the Reef Hawaiian Pro before heading into the last QS event at Sunset Beach.

The competition should be on again tomorrow as the swell holds for a day or two before it fades away... As far as the rest of the waiting period go, there's another swell on the horizon and it's supposed to hit the North shore during the 2 final days of the waiting period.

Check out today's video highlights and stay tuned for FUEL TV's coverage of the 2009 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing:

Haleiwa, HI (Nov. 18, 2009) - Sunny Garcia, 39, was once quoted as saying that "tricks are for kids". Twenty years deep in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing presented by Rock Star Energy Drink, Garcia's power surfing looked to be pulling rank again today. In the second-to-last heat of the day, Garcia posted the event's highest two-wave total: 13.5 out of 20 points. But while Garcia enjoyed the moment, 20-year-old Clay Marzo, known world wide for a bottomless bag of convoluted tricks, was oblivious to the world and notching up a crowd-stunning score of 16.23 to close.

Garcia won his first Hawaiian Pro title here back in 1992, around the same time Marzo was first starting to show his affinity for water in his baby bath. His mind-blowing natural talent was front and center today as he became the only surfer to top Garcia.

Sunny (pictured here) is looking for a dream script here, in search of his sixth Hawaiian Pro title and seventh Triple Crown title as the cameras of his documentary film roll. For Marzo, this is his grand appearance on surfing's premier stage; a total newcomer to the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing.

There were no subtitles required for Garcia's powerful hacks and well-honed ship-to-shore rides. But spectators scrambled in the sand to put a name to the futuristic, fins-free, spinning moves that Marzo threw with the ease of a card dealer.

"It was a whip, blowie or a throw tail," said a deadpan Marzo.

"I was super stoked the lefts were going today. It was kinda of windy and soft, but it was fun waves.

"Hale'iwa is a fun wave. I surfed it since NSSA's. I'm pretty comfortable because I did good on some of those contests. It's a fun wave. I just want to make a couple of heats and do pretty good because it's my first year."

Earlier in the day, southern Californian pair Tanner Gudauskas and Nathan Yeomans breathed a sigh of relief as they advanced one step closer to their goal of qualifying for the 2010 ASP Dream Tour.

Flynn Novak advanced into Round 4

Sitting on the bubble of qualification, at 17th on the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) ratings, Gudauskas mixed it up with his own version of airs, fins-free turns and on-rail gouges to win his heat.

"Before my heat I was worried about how my board was going to go," said Tanner. "It's a 5'7" "Dumpster Diver" shaped for my brother Dane. It felt good the last couple days and I asked him if I could ride it today. My first couple waves I was falling and I was wondering if I made the right choice. But I got the ones at the end and my luck changed and my rhythm changed."

If Tanner Gudauskas can crack the Top 16 of the WQS, he'll join his other brother Patrick on the elite world tour. "Either way it goes, I'll either be a (Dream Tour) travel buddy with Pat or a (WQS) travel buddy with Dane."

Yeomans was equally successful today and next faces 2007 Vans Triple Crown champion Bede Durbidge (AUS) and Vans star John John Florence (HAW) in the next round.

California's Timmy Reyes

Reef Hawaiian Pro Opens Up Triple Crown of Surfing

Fri Nov 13 01:43:14 -0800 2009

 All photos by Paulo Dias

Vans Triple Crown of Surfing is officially on!

The Reef Hawaiian Pro, first jewel of the Triple Crown series, was called on this morning after the contest director assessed the conditions at the beautiful Ali'i Beach Park. The waves started of on the fun side but throughout the day, with the change in the winds and inconsistent swell, Randy Rarick and his team put an early stop on the contest.

Two Maui boys, Hank Gaskell and Granger Larsen put some of the best performances of the day. Granger even posted a 9.33, the highest scoring wave of the event so far.

Stay tuned for daily updates and video highlights straight out of Haleiwa, in the North Shore of Oahu!

FUEL TV will be presenting a live HD webcast of the final 4 days of the Billabong Pipeline Masters... Don't miss it!

Haleiwa, North Shore of Oahu (November 12th, 09) - Eyes were on the waves but minds were on the money as the $1,000,000 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing presented by Rockstar Energy Drink hit the water with day one of the Reef Hawaiian Pro - an ASP men's 6-star prime World Qualifying Series event. Subsequently, few people noticed that the bulk of the 10- to 12-foot NE swell wasn't making it around the corner into Haleiwa, and thousands lived it up in the bikini-strutting weather.

Haleiwa leveled the playing field today as visiting and local surfers met somewhere in the middle between international beach break conditions and the Hawaiian power expected here this time of year. Results were as mixed as the waves that ranged from five feet in the morning, to just a couple of feet before the event was halted around 2p.m. at heat 11 of the round of 128 surfers.

The earlier heats lucked out with offshore winds and punchier conditions. Maui's Granger Larsen nailed down the best of it, cranking out three powerful snaps to earn a 9.33, the highest scoring wave of the contest so far.

Mason Ho

Fresh off a win from the XCEL Pro at Sunset Beach in massive surf, Hank Gaskell (Maui) channeled his momentum to push through the crumbly late afternoon conditions in heat nine and took down super-grom Nat Young (Santa Cruz, Ca.) with explosive surfing. He sealed the deal with a frontside air reverse with just a few minutes remaining in the heat. Young answered back with fins-free surfing of his own with one minute remaining, posting a 7.10, but it wasn't enough to overtake second place Alain Riou (PYF).

"I'm just going one heat at a time. That's all that I can do," said Gaskell. "I'm not a real favorite to win the Triple Crown. I'm just trying to do my personal best.

"I'm stoked on Vans for offering the Triple Threat. Surfers are professional athletes and we all work hard and we're underpaid compared to other sports. I'm not complaining. I was making good money before I got dropped, but hopefully I'll get another sponsor (laughs). Surfing is a great sport and we deserve to get as much as any other professional sport."

Last year's Reef Hawaiian Pro Champion Michel Bourez (PYF) powered through his first heat of the day, taking down Richard Christie (NZ), and a pair of former Vans Triple Crown champions in Myles Padaca (HAW) and Kaipo Jaquias (HAW). But his run ended in the next round, losing to Hale'iwa resident Joel Centeio and James Taipan Wood (AUS), who took first and second, respectively

"Last year was barreling, offshore and perfect," said Bourez, assessing today's conditions. "Today was mushy and small and most of the waves were lefts, so it was different. I just tried as hard as I could to score two good ones.

"The one million dollar prize purse is good for the sport," said Bourez. "It's the first time ever so everyone is excited to win the Triple Crown."
